Since the introduction of the Highlander in 2001, the mid-size sports-utility vehicle has been rated as one of top in its class. The 2009 Highlander comes in three distinctive trim levels- Base, Sport and Limited. The second-generation Highlander is significantly larger, more spacious and more powerful as compared to its previous models. It also promises enhanced versatility and ride comfort. The Highlander has scored impressively high in almost all of test drive categories. The popular SUV is available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
Exterior Look
On the outside, the 2009 Toyota Highlander features more aggressive and muscular styling. The exterior is marked by a silver-painted grille; color-keyed foldable power outside mirrors; UV reduction glass windshield; privacy glass on rear side quarter and tailgate windows; washer-linked variable intermittent windshield wipers; and a rear window with electric defogger and intermittent wiper.
Interior Cabin
The 2009 Toyota Highlander's interior is now more luxurious than the previous generation. The Highlander features competitive interior space (145.7 cubic feet) and comfort for seven occupants. It features three-row seating, including fold second-row bucket seats and third-row folding seats. The driver and passenger areas are spacious with lots of space for coffee mugs and cell phones. Some of the standard interior features of the 2009 Toyota Highlander include, air conditioning; front seats with height-adjustable active head rests; eight-way (10-way on Limited) adjustable driver's seat; power door locks; power windows with driver's window jam protection and auto-up/down feature; UV-reduction windshield; and cruise control.
Under the hood
A new four-cylinder engine debuts with the 2009 Toyota Highlander, that comes standard on the Base grade with two-wheel drive. The new 2.7-liter, 4-cylinder engine produces 187 horsepower engine, and it is exclusively mated with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The 3.5-liter, V6, 270 horsepower engine is standard on the Sport and Limited models and optional on the Base grade. The V6 engine uses a standard five-speed automatic transmission.
Safety
The 2009 Toyota Highlander features the segment-leading airbag coverage that includes advanced driver and front passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and a driver's knee airbag, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, front-seat active headrests, three-row curtain airbags, and front-seatbelt pretensioners. Some other safety features of the SUV include tire-pressure monitoring, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control.
