For 2009 Highlander, Toyota introduced a new four-cylinder engine. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is standard on the Base grade Highlander with two-wheel drive (2WD). The engine produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb ft of peak torque, providing excellent fuel efficiency. It offers an EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon in highway driving. The new four-cylinder engine is teamed exclusively with a standard six-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transmission.
The 3.5-liter V6 engine is standard on the Sport and Limited grades and optional on the Base grade, that produces 270 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 248 lb ft of torque at 4,700 RPM. It has an EPA estimate of 24 miles per gallon in highway driving with two-wheel drive. The V6 engine is mated to a five-speed electronically controlled transmission.
