The Toyota SUV Some Buyers Choose Over the Highlander: Crown Kluger vs Highlander Compared
China builds two Toyota seven-seat SUVs on the same wheelbase: the GAC Toyota Highlander and the FAW Toyota Crown Kluger. Here is how they differ — and which one suits your market.

Short answer: the Crown Kluger is the Highlander's sister SUV, built in China by FAW Toyota instead of GAC Toyota. It shares the 2,850 mm wheelbase and both powertrains, but it is 50 mm longer, carries Crown badging and starts higher up the trim ladder. Choose the Crown Kluger for a more upscale image; choose the Highlander for the lowest entry price and the widest trim choice.
Why does China have two versions of the same Toyota?
Toyota builds cars in China through two joint ventures: GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota. Each sells its own range, so closely related models appear under different names. The Highlander comes from GAC Toyota; the Crown Kluger (皇冠陆放) comes from FAW Toyota.

What does the Crown Kluger add?
According to Autohome's launch report, the 2026 Crown Kluger's upgrades include a 15.6-inch multimedia system, panoramic view monitor, 50 W wireless charging, rear acoustic glass, ventilated front seats and 64-colour ambient lighting, plus an optional factory black-and-gold two-tone finish. Its hybrid range starts at the Luxury grade (¥284,800), so there is no low-cost Elite version.
Why do some importers prefer the Crown Kluger?
- Image — the Crown name signals a premium product in markets that know it
- Equipment — higher base equipment, because the range starts at Luxury grade
- Size — 50 mm more length for a slightly more substantial look
Why is the Highlander still the safer volume choice?
- Recognition — "Highlander" is the name buyers search for in most export markets
- Entry price — the 5-seat FWD Elite hybrid starts ¥35,000 below the cheapest Crown Kluger at MSRP
- Trim spread — 9 trims in 2026, plus used 2024 and 2023 supply for budget buyers
Can I order both in one shipment?
Yes. Mixed-model orders are accepted. If you want to test both names in your market, ask for a quote on a mixed container — contact sales with the trims you are considering.
