New vs. Used Toyota Highlander Export from China: Which Option Gives Dealers the Best Margin?
In China, the 2026 Highlander hybrid now starts below the price the 2023 model launched at. That changes the new-vs-used maths for importers. Here is how to decide.

Short answer: used Highlanders win on purchase price, but new ones often win on total margin once you add age limits, duty rules and how fast the car sells. The deciding factors are your country's import rules and what your buyers are willing to pay for a 0 km Toyota.
How have Highlander prices changed in China?
Chinese list prices have fallen. The entry 2023 Highlander hybrid launched at a China MSRP of ¥268,800; the entry 2026 hybrid lists at ¥249,800 — ¥19,000 less, with a bigger 15.6-inch screen. Dealer quotes on Autohome start lower still.
| Model year | Powertrains | China MSRP when new | Supply |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 2.5L hybrid · 2.0T petrol | ¥249,800–325,800 | New (0 km) |
| 2024 | 2.5L hybrid · 2.0T petrol | ¥249,800–325,800 | Used |
| 2023 | 2.5L hybrid | ¥268,800–348,800 | Used |
When a new car is cheaper at list than the old one was, the discount on a used vehicle has to be large to beat it. Compare actual quotes, not assumptions.
When does a used Highlander make more sense?
- Your buyers are price-driven and accept a used vehicle with known history
- Your country's duty is lower for the used vehicle's age or valuation
- The used car's trim is higher than a new car at the same price — for example a used AWD Premium instead of a new FWD Elite
- You can sell before the vehicle crosses your market's age limit
When does a new Highlander make more sense?
- Strict age limits: Saudi Arabia, for example, limits the age of imported used cars
- Buyers who finance, or fleets that need predictable condition and the latest cockpit
- Repeat orders — new stock in a chosen trim and colour is easier to repeat than used
- You want the newest equipment: every 2026 trim has a 15.6-inch screen and Snapdragon 8155P
What are the risks with used vehicles?
Condition and paperwork. Ask for the trim, mileage and equipment of the actual vehicle, with photos or video, and check its manufacturing date against your age limit. We send this before you commit, and third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
How should a dealer compare the two?
- Get a FOB or CIF quote for both: a new 2026 and a used 2024 or 2023 in comparable trims.
- Add your country's duty, taxes and fees for each — they often differ by age.
- Estimate your selling price and how many weeks each will take to sell.
- Margin per week of stock, not margin per car, tells you which is better.
