Why Overseas Dealers Import Toyota Highlander Hybrids from China (The Supply Chain Explained)
China is one of the largest markets for the Highlander, with two production networks and intense dealer price competition. Here is how that supply reaches importers — and where margin is made or lost.

Short answer: dealers import Highlander hybrids from China because the vehicle is built there in volume, Chinese dealer prices are well below list, and an exporter can source new and used units from many channels at once. Margin comes from buying the right trim at the right price and keeping export and freight costs under control — not from a fixed number per car.
Who builds the Highlander in China?
GAC Toyota, Toyota's joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group, builds the China-market Highlander. The current 2026 model offers nine trims with a 2.5L hybrid or a 2.0T petrol.
Why are Chinese prices competitive?
China's car market is highly competitive, and dealers discount to move stock. On 4 October 2026, Autohome listed 2026 Highlander dealer quotes from ¥210,800 against a ¥249,800 MSRP for the entry hybrid. List prices have also come down: the entry 2026 hybrid lists ¥19,000 below the entry 2023 hybrid.
How does the supply chain work?
- Sourcing — the exporter buys from domestic vehicle sources, fleet channels and partner suppliers.
- Inspection — each vehicle is checked; the buyer receives photos or video.
- Export clearance — export documents and customs clearance on the China side.
- Transport to port — by car-carrier truck to the port of loading.
- Shipping — Ro-Ro or container to the buyer's port.
- Import — the buyer's broker clears customs, certifies and registers the vehicle.

Where is margin made — and lost?
| Factor | Helps margin | Hurts margin |
|---|---|---|
| Trim choice | Trims your buyers ask for | Over-specified stock that sits |
| Condition | New, or inspected used with documents | Unverified used vehicles |
| Freight | Full containers, mixed orders | Single units on expensive routes |
| Compliance | Age limits and certification checked first | Vehicles blocked at customs |
| Localisation | Phone mirroring explained to buyers | Unexpected language issues |
